Special Guest Interview with Lillie Kane on The Plant Free MD Podcast!

Dr. Anthony Chaffee interviews Louie Kane, a health coach and content creator who transformed her health through a carnivore lifestyle. Kane shares her journey from a standard American diet filled with processed foods to discovering meat-based eating through her fiancé's influence. Growing up in low-income circumstances eating primarily ramen and processed foods, she later struggled with knee pain from track and field, leading to weight gain and health issues in her twenties.

The conversation explores practical approaches to weight loss and carnivore implementation, with Kane explaining her "hyper-carnivore" approach (98% animal foods) and addressing common pitfalls like copying others too rigidly or not eating enough. She emphasizes the importance of bio-individuality in coaching clients, noting that sustainable results often require addressing underlying factors like sleep, stress, and mindset rather than just dietary changes. Kane discusses her experience with over 100 different animal foods and the flexibility within carnivore eating.

Both speakers address the anti-aging benefits they've experienced, with visible improvements in appearance and energy levels compared to peers. The discussion covers practical social situations, the role of fasting in weight management, and holistic health approaches including meditation, sleep optimization, and stress reduction. Kane shares insights from interviewing various medical professionals and experts, demonstrating how proper nutrition affects everything from brain chemistry to hormone production, challenging conventional dietary wisdom with real-world results.

Key Takeaways

  • Prioritize protein first in meals, then add fats - this approach naturally regulates appetite and supports sustainable weight loss better than calorie restriction
  • Weight gain during initial carnivore transition often indicates hormonal rebalancing, particularly in people with previous caloric restriction - patience for 6+ months may be required
  • Under-eating on carnivore can prevent weight loss by slowing metabolism and disrupting hormones - adequate calories from fatty meat are essential for optimal results
  • Test individual food tolerances by eliminating everything except beef and salt, then systematically reintroducing foods like eggs, pork, or chicken to identify reactions
  • Sleep quality and stress management are equally important as diet - blue light exposure, meditation, and consistent sleep schedules support metabolic function
  • Social eating challenges can be minimized by simply ordering meat dishes without announcing dietary choices - most people don't notice or care about food selections
  • Seasonal and local eating within carnivore parameters can provide variety - over 100 different animal foods exist including various cuts, organs, and seafood options
  • Low cholesterol levels correlate with increased depression and suicide risk - fatty animal foods provide cholesterol needed for hormone production and brain function

okay hi everybody it's dr chafee here and uh with another episode of plant free md i have a very special guest louie kane uh she was kind enough to have me on her show a couple of times and now i'm very happy to have her on mine hello lily how are you good i'm excited this is me great how are you very well thank you very much thanks for coming on for for people that don't know i think i think a lot of uh people actually came and followed me from our our conversation on yours so i think a lot of people will know who you are but for those who don't can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what you do yep so um i am a full-time influencer um health coach and so i do work with clients one-on-one as well but um otherwise all day every day i'm just making content to hopefully help more people let reach their healthiest and happiest lives because i watch so many people my friends my family people my age who have things going on and it just makes me a lot of the the the video content that i make is actually from things that they tell me and i can't really tell them to their face certain things because i've tried that and it burns some bridges so i've had to just find a way to be able to express myself by making videos and whoever wants to benefit from them then whether i'm right or wrong at least hopefully it can get people to get people doing more research and asking more questions yeah i think that's that's a good way of approaching it and and you're right you know some people are very receptive to this other people for one reason or another they just think like okay look this isn't even something i can consider right now and or or want to consider right now and and so you obviously you don't want to damage a friendship or a relationship with a family member uh on something like that and if they you know if they are interested and they they watch these sorts of things then that's great and and if not then you know that's okay too so great all right so you've been you've been sort of coming around to the the sort of the meat based keto carnivore sort of side of things what was your introduction to all that how did you start start researching that yourself finding these things out and what are you where do you sort of land on the spectrum now on what you like to do so initially i grew up very low income and my mom was an alcoholic and she was a single mom so we kind of grew up having a lot of top ramen macaroni and cheese hot dogs at the time i thought i was eating a very balanced healthy diet but that's just because we didn't have the resources to buy things like soda and chips and candies and things like that but i feel like now looking back my whole life i was probably underweight and under eating just because we didn't have excess um and then when i went to college that was my first time having an abundance of food all i could eat and i was a track athlete though so at least i was able to consume a lot of calories and burn burn them a little bit um i gained 15 pounds my freshman year and then by the time i graduated yeah i did it yeah and then um yeah i was just getting a very standard american diet but i felt like um i was eating a healthy diet i didn't even no one taught me anything especially i don't know if it was the school system that i grew up in but nobody says anything like i didn't even hear red meat causes cancer until i started putting my videos out um and so i didn't know anything about health and nutrition but in track they say make sure to have lots of pasta before we have a race day and i love dessert who doesn't love dessert so i would have many desserts and then by the time i graduated i was very strong um but then i decided at that point my knees were in so much pain from eight years of track and field and hurling that i couldn't even walk upstairs and i had to even have a day where i was in a wheelchair and then using crutches because my my pain was so bad in my knees that once i graduated i said okay i'm done running this is great i'm a i'm a skinny person so i don't have to work out anymore i can eat whatever i want and i'm going to feel amazing because i'm young and all of that i ended up moving to maui and then that's where i watched my my my muscle slowly turn into more fat and then i ended up meeting my fiance now who at the time um i was eating the lily diet of donuts paninis quesadillas pizza all that and when we first met he didn't want to tell me like i don't drink i don't i don't eat chips i don't have these kinds of foods so he just kind of went along with it in the beginning and in the process then he his health started deteriorating and he had already done keto so he one night i came home and i could just it's very obvious when he has things going on and so he said i have to go back to eating keto but you lily do do what you want to do yeah and it got pretty tough when i'm like do you want to go do you want to make deep fried oreos and put the the oreos and funfetti cake batter and deep fry them in canola oil have one have one you're missing out on life and he's like no thank you and like trying to be very kind about it um and then i mean so eventually it got to the point where i'm like it's not fun having ice cream by myself it's no fun having to be the one who i really looked up to him and admired him because i'd be like don't you want a donut and he'd be like oh no thank you and i was like how do you do that and so he slowly was doing more and more research um he found keto probably seven years ago from robert sykes so he's a bodybuilder and so he did not think it was possible to have a good physique without carbs and by watching robert sykes that's who inspired him and so he started making his own keto breaks and all that and so initially i was like so we're not having bread just this week or we're not having rice just this week and i think my approach to that made it easier for me to like do all of this but in the same sense he never told me lily you have to do what i'm doing like buy whatever you want make your food um but just because we grocery shop together we cook together we eat together it was just easier for me to slowly start doing what he was doing eventually he started learning more about carnivore and i didn't even realize he was eating carnivore i was just like oh today he's not having an avocado he's not having the cauliflower rice and the cauliflower wraps and i started going why am i buying all this cauliflower pizza crust and cauliflower everything and is this cauliflower really giving me all that that i need um i ended up watching dr ken berry's video on the six foods saying beef bacon butter eggs liver and sardines and i was like oh that's pretty simple i love keeping keeping things easy and so eventually then we kind of moved more towards that kind of unintentionally so my whole goal in finding this whole way of eating was never because i was trying to heal anything or trying to lose weight but in the process i ended up having so many health benefits that i was like this is insane and then i ended up posting a youtube video about it and uh the rest was history nice so how so how did you end up getting into the youtube side of things did you is that something you wanted to do for a while or did you just sort of do it for fun and then it sort of took off from there so um in maui when kobe hit nobody was allowed to come into the island for nine months and i was a realtor so that didn't uh it doesn't really work very well and so we ended up reevaluating what we wanted to do because we didn't want to live there forever anyway so we ended up moving um back to pennsylvania where he's from and in the process i was like i need to do something while we figure out what we're gonna do next and so then i was like well i wanna help people so i'm going to make a youtube channel about crafts from mr beast's idea and i'm gonna send these crafts out to people all over the world and so i did that initially in the beginning and i was sending crafts all over to people and then i just started talking about trends and talking about what to get your boyfriend for valentine's day and then what do i eat in a day and then that was just where things kind of blew up and people started asking me more questions like but what about fiber but what about heart disease but what about all these things and then i started realizing like i didn't even when i posted that video i did not know i was eating a carnivore diet i thought i was eating keto so i was just eating my food mine in my business and then i post this video and then it was like what are you doing yeah that's funny it was it's funny how those things sort of take off too you're just sort of doing your thing and then something something hits people go wait a minute but it but it is you know people get very surprised uh by these you know most most people are very positive um you know in the comments section to the things that that i post um but i sort of invite contrary points of view it's all like tag vegans and things like that and all my stuff because i just not to not to be uh you know you know mean about and throw something in their face but but to try to start a conversation and just say hey look here here's the other side of the coin there's the other side of the argument um what do you think and and i like to i like to engage in conversations with these guys um because you know it's i think it's important you know these are the people that you know really need to hear this stuff the most and you know when i was when i was researching this i went out of my way to find vegan doctors and researchers and look at their research and talk to them and say okay okay can you tell me about this and what about this and can you explain that and what about this and and just just to make sure i wasn't missing something glaring i wasn't but you know it was like you know i wanted to make sure and so it's um you want to try to get reach people and i think that's the way to do it so i'll get some people saying like oh you're just going to say the same thing you're just going to die of cancer and hard this this and the other and you can say well actually and just sort of you know set them straight and and talk about these things some people are quite receptive about that i've actually had a lot of conversations that didn't deteriorate into you know just childish name calling on the internet it was you know they actually you know had people be like oh crap you know i never really thought about that like okay yeah i'll think about it which is which is great and when you're in person it's a lot easier as well so i'm sure you've uh been able to to have fun conversations like that too hopefully not too many yeah i what some people you can kind of just tell they're closed minded so it's like i'm not gonna go back and forth and argue with that but i think that the comments do help when people leave even if it's a negative comment because it gives more engagement so it's gonna give the video out to somebody who might be more open-minded so even if it's a vegan who's very hardcore vegan and they're going to write a mean comment and i can't change my mind about it their comment helps me get more engagement to reach more people who do care so it's like yeah and you'll see too other people will read their comment and like sometimes you don't even need to to weigh in because they're they're already going well actually well actually and here's a study and here's this and watch this uh which is great because you know people are really really doing their homework and they're really learning this stuff and so now now they're out there because you know previously there weren't more very many of us um you know you know talking about this sort of thing now there's quite a lot of people it's quite a lot of people that have done a lot of research they've seen a lot of videos and i've read a lot of books and read a lot of studies um you know and and and now they're being able to you know quote the literature and and uh and talk about these sorts of things which is great because before it was very one-sided you know it was like it was just like you eat me you're gonna die most people are like i don't know if i buy that but like i don't really have any hard you know reason to to just to call on it yet um but it's changing which i think is really good i honestly think that in the next sort of five ten years this is going to be a very mainstream accepted uh way of eating and hopefully just just continue on from there um yeah similar to like you know keto initially was like oh no way and then now it's like all you see in the grocery all that i see in the grocery store is like keto product keto product and i mean they're all a bunch of you know i wouldn't have them but at least people know about keto like they know about veganism yeah yeah so then do you do like full carnivore now or what do you do so now i do i call it hyper carnivore and so hyper carnivore is an animal whose diet is 70 or more meat so people probably i mean i don't know what people think when i say that they're probably like wow she has 30 of her calories are from animal foods realistically in a week my calories are probably 98 animal foods um but i do put seasonings on my meat i do have some blueberries each week and i am totally open-minded personally to having more fruit but i don't want to have frankin fruit and i don't want to have the the super-sized fruit at the grocery stores that are all modified for sugar content and just so and then a lot of the fruit too at my personal because i live in st louis so we don't have i mean it's it's march right now we don't have fresh grapes and pineapples and mangoes so i try to eat seasonally and locally and the fruit in my grocery store is rotten and moldy and old but eventually i'm not going to live here and i would like to have maybe some more fruit just because for me i like the taste and um yeah not for like trying to get more vitamins and minerals out of them i don't think the nutrition's in the plants yeah well i mean then you know doing something because you enjoy it you know it's fine too and if you're able to limit that and not get back into the carbon sugar you know addictions and cravings uh and and that's something that you like to do then that's great you know uh not everyone can um you know talk to people uh who uh you know see different different sorts of uh you know former carnivore advocates now you know semi-meat-based uh advocates who are saying you should eat a lot of fruit and honey or at least some and not only is it okay but you have to you know you for optimal health that you're you're going to get organ dysfunction you're going to drop your testosterone and your thyroid if you don't do this and you're going to get very sick um so some of these people are listening to that and and i've spoken to a lot of people that have been eating a little bit of fruit a little bit of honey and that's become more fruit and more honey and then it's like some you know and then it's like juice and then it's soda and now and within six months they're you know eating pizza and chips and donuts and they've regained a bunch of weight and they're sick again and and then they're like oh jesus i i really have to stay away from that stuff and and a lot of people that come into this um you know do it because they're having health issues and they've had uh you know disordered eating and and don't have a healthy relationship with with food or at least having it in the past and when they they start doing that it's you know it's it's not a good outcome you know some people can have a drink every now and then like i i may have you know drink literally once every year or two and that's fine i really don't want to drink after that i just have it that one time and that's it um not everyone can do that you know and and i understand that so you know if you're in that category it's probably best just just to avoid um yeah so you've done a ton of interviews at this point haven't you yeah yeah like how many are you at now i don't know i haven't i haven't kept track but i mean i was thinking about it yesterday and i was like wow i've had medical doctors chiropractic doctors eye doctors dentists heart doctors archaeologists i mean i was like wow there's been that many different kinds of you know people who are involved in different aspects of it too right because it's not just yeah i want to know how it works with my teeth i want to know how it works with like evolution and archaeology so it's um it's been really awesome being able to connect with all these people and get get more of an understanding for myself and also the questions i get from people too is usually the questions i ask yeah and um you know obviously because you've talk spoken all these people i guess you were you were pretty much keto carnival that was that was what you were doing before that but now that you've spoken to so many people you know has that changed your views at all has that changed your outlook on things or was that has that done for your personal development so i was actually strict carnivore initially before my with my first youtube videos again accidentally um or just like not intentionally knowing i was doing it that way i was just eating my foods i didn't grow up like seasoning my foods it was just you have pepper and salt and that was it um and honestly when i started having people leave me comments like you can't have xyz food it made me just like i don't like rules and i don't like people tell me what i can and can't do then i ended up being like i can have some blueberries and i'm gonna be fine like let's let's pick our poison here people if we're talking about the majority of people are eating pizza and chips and oreos and things like are we really gonna debate about an apple right now like there's or even things like artificial lights like i have non blue light emitting light bulbs i have 100 organic cotton sheets like i have and i do other things that nobody's perfect so you know we got to do what's best for us and it was because of so many people's comments telling me that i can't have xyz that i started question like being like okay i need to i need to be the role model for for other people that there are a lot of people who are getting maybe food anxiety or like feeling like super like anxious around food and i don't want to have i want to be able to show people that it depending on who you are it can be okay to have other seasonings or whatever it is that people want to have depending on your situation situation so by having more conversations with the people who have interviewed i also realized that you're the only actual person who i know who eats carnivore everybody else has coffee seasonings has fruit and um so i've kind of loosened up a little bit more so they corrupted you so you got what got reversed i don't know i'm sorry um i saw i saw your interview with um the archaeologist i can't remember his name dr bill schindler cool guy really interesting yeah um yeah it's really nice to sort of you know go to the horse's mouth i i knew you know some of the stuff he was talking about but obviously he knew way more more details and could really go into depth with a lot of these things which is which is fantastic so it's um yeah that was that was a really interesting one and um what what has been you know with those sorts of interviews like how often do you do interviews and how often you are you publishing things um it just depends so i would say with because on my channel i do two videos a week but if that's not always with other people most of the time it's by myself so um it kind of just depends some months i'll have six people sometimes i'll have two people um and sometimes i'll break the video apart just because i know it can be daunting to want to watch a two-hour video so i try to find what we were talking about and make it so if someone's going to search the topic then they can find more of a video that fits that yeah i'd say one i actually was talking to uh someone having one of those um discussions with a with a vegan guy he's like well what about him but he was receptive he but he was just like he's like hey you know but what about this and what about this and so i was answering i was telling him he's like all right yeah that makes sense but you know what about this one about this and i said look you know there's this video that explains sort of everything you need he's like okay i'll check it out and then like 10 seconds later he comes back is like 45 minutes question mark nope it was like all right like you don't have to but you know here here are the cliff notes but you know if you have time like it just breaks down everything i mean you know that that is the problem as well is that you know these are these are complex issues uh you know if you really want to get into the details it's actually pretty simple just don't eat plants simple but you know if you really want to get into the you know the details as to why you you know that's important and why eating meat is important especially fatty meat then you need to take a little time time with it and because there's so many uh myths and rumors and uh just falsehoods out there to do with this you you need to take time to dispel those those sorts of things and you know that that's not quick you can't do that in a sound bite you can't do that in a in a headline some people can't like thomas soul can that guy is brilliant i don't know if you've ever read him he's an economist and just literally like i i honestly think he's the most brilliant and well-developed thinker that america has ever produced and like you know reading his books and his columns are like a master class on how to think and how to approach information to really dig down to the bedrock of a situation just analyze it and really find what's really going on and just be like yo okay yeah that's it you know i mean say his columns read like a mathematical proof in beautiful english and you're just like at the end of it you're like yeah that that's what that is you know you have some some issue going on back and forth between different acts you know pundits and experts for for weeks at a time and he just goes look here's the situation here's a history here's the background here's this here's this here's this here are the facts on this side here the facts on this side and you know here's the stuff they're not telling you you just go yeah okay yep that that's over that's very straightforward and so you know he has a particular genius of describing making very complex uh situations describing him very very easily and uh you know i think that's a that's a gift and you know hopefully you know we can do that for people as well but i don't think anyone's going to do it as well as he can so trying so it takes longer is what i'm saying yeah but yeah um so you obviously do coaching as well what sort of coaching do you do is this is this for mainly weight loss or just general health improvements or who do you normally work with so mainly is about weight loss or meal plans or how to start a carnivore or hyper carnivore diet um because some people are very busy right they don't have that 45 minutes to binge watch all of my videos because i try to provide as much free content as possible and i feel like i answer every question i've really ever gotten i have pretty much answered already um yeah but there's you know some people who are very busy and they're like i just i don't want to watch all the videos just tell me what to start doing or how to do it and the other thing too is as much as these are free you know that the content can't help people kind of on the surface level it doesn't really help them individually if it's like okay what's your height what's your weight what's your sleep schedule what's your work schedule what do you do you know all that stuff that goes into it so i can really bio-individualize and make something that's sustainable for their lifestyle because i can just i eat two meals in a day right now that might not work for everybody so um you know it's nice to get to work with people one-on-one and then most of the time they want to know about um weight loss but even my first person um she was more anorexic so she wanted to know about how to gain weight um but most of the time just overall healthy lifestyle i've had people talk to me about spirituality meditation mindset so or moving past a relationship going through a divorce so a lot of times i think people want someone to talk to yeah just to relate to so yeah i think my answer to every single one of those things would just be eat more meat don't eat plants even the day and forest like i'm getting horses like well make sure you don't eat any plants and make it worse because that would be awful and make yourself depressed but um yeah i i feel i i feel the same way you know i try to i try to you know get these things out there just so people can have access to them um but you know of course people do uh there there are individual uh tailored sort of responses that and very specific questions that people have i do feel bad uh because like i really most of the time i'm just telling them you know like you know just don't eat any plants just eat more meat no no seriously just just only eat meat and um and and so i sort of preface this by telling people i'm like literally that's that's what i'm going to tell you as far as what to eat if you can see my videos and if you if you have questions after that or you want to discuss certain things after that then then certainly we can set something up but i want i want this to be worth it to you um and so yeah i don't want to i don't want to just you know just uh just tell you something that that that uh you already know yeah yeah so what it was sorry go on also i know that the i like the the simple approach that's how i am just tell me what just give me the easy spark notes you ain't no plans cool but for you know some people i work with they like are eating cookies and candies and they're having that sugar addiction and they're using that as the crutch for their stress and so like really i try to dial down and like why are you having the urge to reach for that so what like what can we work on a lot of times with diet like we talk about diet people think like okay if salmon is the healthiest thing in the world then i should just eat salmon and all of my problems are going to go away but it's not the case if there's like it diets a great aspect of it but then it's also like we need to work on sleep because if you're not sleeping through the night you're not going to be able to wake up and make the choices that are the healthiest for you and you are yeah i mean there's just a lot more that goes into it that when i love the simple simple approach but a lot more people need more uh to figure out why they are doing that because even still right we want to make it sustainable and so some people they can't make eating meat only sustainable they have uh work events they have relation they're starting to date they don't want to be the weirdo or even if that is the case and they are going to do the only meat thing then how can we shift your mind around that and how can we make you feel comfortable and confident in doing it yeah yeah i think that's that's something a lot of people struggle with as well is the social interactions and they feel very awkward but you know you think about it someone who's vegetarian vegan be like oh no i just i just don't eat meat people are very accepting of that and maybe maybe it's a bit more weird now be like oh i don't even wait wait you don't but you know at the same time you don't you don't need to telegraph it because you know you go to dinner and you just order a steak there's just a steak a lot of these things come all apart anyway and a lot of people will just eat the steak and they'll have a maybe a bit of salad or something like that most people leave that alone anyway i i generally did before i was doing this i just just ate the steak and no one said anything and so you don't have to i think a lot of this comes from people being very self-conscious and worrying about it and then and then they sort of bring it up as like a defense is like oh this is what i do and this is what i'm doing or something like that when they could have just just ate meat and just no one would have really said anything i certainly did you know the second time around and i was i was very sort of weird about it and and ended up having the conversation on what what i was doing and why i was doing it quite regularly which is probably good because i got repetition in talking about this topic but which made it a lot easier to talk to you know patients and other people and do these videos as well because i've literally done it like a thousand times and so like just explaining myself to people um but then i think back to when i when i first did this uh in my early 20s i you know i was five years plus that i exclusively ate meat i didn't i didn't bat an eye i didn't think about it for a second i was just like yeah nope not eating any plants and just like oh okay so i just really eat this it never came up once it literally never came up once no one cared and i didn't talk about it and they didn't talk about it it was just like yeah just they just me oh just eat the meat part of things people are other things i'm not just eating that i just didn't talk about it i didn't think about it and it really never came up and and now it doesn't it doesn't either because you know now i just don't i don't care anymore and this is what i do and i don't talk about it and i just get on with it and some people ask me like jesus christ three plates of eggs and bacon like nice and uh you know i wish i could eat like that you know i just don't want to you know die of a heart attack you work out so much obviously it's okay and it's like well you know actually you know you know this is this is actually why i you know in the shape that i am and that and that can come across you know come up with a with a natural sort of conversation that way but it but it's not me being self-conscious and worried about it's actually them being interested in it yeah a lot of times we work it up in our heads everyone's looking at me everyone's judging me people don't really care they don't have the time to care and they're too busy thinking about themselves that everyone's judging them so um even when we were eating this way again this is prior to my even youtube channel even existing we went and visited my family for thanksgiving and we're like yeah we're just gonna eat the entire turkey for you guys because you know there's always leftovers we were there for a week so it's like every morning we were eating all the bacon all the turkey and like they didn't ask questions like where's your fruit where's your veggies they just were like right on and then then i made a youtube video i only eat meat and butter and they're like what since when and i was like you guys were with me the whole time remember thanksgiving like then yeah that's why yeah well you know that that's a funny thing too because my family never said anything about it when i first started doing this and then you know when when i when i did this the second time because i was so interested in it because i was you know looking into it and being i was like oh wow do you see this you see this do you see this before it's just like yeah plants are trying to kill me not gonna touch this stuff and and i just did that no one said anything and i always only wanted to eat the meat anyway and so you know i was just to just do that so it really wasn't too big of a difference and and maybe they just didn't see the the sort of a pattern uh but my brother did i was living with him at the time and i would only eat meat he never he never said a thing you know he didn't do it you know he would eat bread but um yeah i you know he didn't say a thing about it then this you know next time i think it's because i was more interested in it so i was talking about like oh look at this study i found look at this thing i found look at this thing i found and so that's what got my family more interested in it and my parents tried it and my brother tried it and uh and it just came up more so i think that that's why it was but yeah like for years the first time it just it just didn't even come up no one no one bad and i don't even know if they realized that i was doing that the whole time but yeah just just like you know your family until you actually started talking about it yeah yeah um so so what are some some straightforward just weight loss tips like how do you how do you approach that when when your clients come and talk to you about the best ways of approaching weight loss so a lot of times people know what to do right a lot of times people know maybe i should be eating you know not having these foods having more of this um but i think too a lot of times people focus they know they shouldn't be having cake cookies pops or whatever but they don't know how to replace it so what it's a lot of times we need that bridge um or even especially like i had sugar addiction too so i i did not transition from keto to carnivore all that like overnight it took me like six months to like slowly slowly okay no bread this month no no vegetables this month it was just very slow process for me and so um because i want to do it make it sustainable i remember the first month i didn't have sugar i was like i'm alive how did i make it i was like i purposely tested myself i'm gonna do one month no sugar so um with weight loss strategies um finding that food that's for you right because i we we eat differently even though we eat very similarly so what uh and then also i say prioritize protein first so if we can prioritize the protein first then depending on the person we can add in mostly you know we're doing fats with what i do but if somebody's listening for whatever reason they want to do carbs i calculate the calories they might need to be hitting in a day minus the protein amount that they're getting and to get the net other foods you can be having um though calories that are tricky subject because not my mind are equal if i had if i gave someone 2000 calories of donuts they're gonna have a different body composition but also just different health than having 2000 calories of steak so um i think prioritizing protein first is a main one but if someone's got the whole diet dabbled down and they're like i'm still not losing weight a lot of times i notice that people are under eating and so that's not going to help with weight loss especially in the long term because people's hormones are going to get messed up and their metabolism is going to slow down and they're going to start losing their hair maybe lose their menstrual cycle and the body's gonna start slowly shutting down so i i really emphasize making sure we're getting enough food because that's also gonna help with weight loss but then of course things like sleep stress like if we are so stressed i don't care if i can i'm giving you the healthiest diet you you're still not gonna you're your body's gonna hold on to it differently or your um vagus nerve connection is not gonna digest the food properly you're not gonna produce the right amount of stomach acid and all that if if you're highly stressed and that's a lot of people have that um and they don't even really not like just the stress we think about stress from work stress from kids i'm saying blue light i'm saying pollution in the air i'm eating off a metal spoon i have my clothes have plastics in them they're not all 100 organic cotton i'm having a deodorant makeup like all the little tiny chemicals and stressors that we put i mean i have jewelry and metals in my body i have a tattoo that has lead into my body so there's a bunch of little things that you know how can we just reduce some of those chemicals we can't fix everything we can't be perfect but um i think focusing on sleep is very important that's something that i prioritize and um yeah so i don't know that was kind of a winded answer for weight loss tips but no it's good all of those are good um you know i yeah i probably know the answer to this but you know you're saying that you know people that aren't losing weight actually sometimes are under eating i think that's that's an important thing for people to understand you know like what are your views on the whole calories in calories out that sort of dogma yeah so i don't personally just even without even having to do research or having to talk to anybody smart my own experience i was somebody who in college was so obsessed i need boys to love me so i need to be have a six pack and i need to be beautiful so i'm going to go on the treadmill for hours and i'm going to do a thousand crunches a day and i'm not and my body composition didn't change why all mean i was eaten whatever um and so i think that it's important to exercise because of longevity purposes and building the muscle because if we're not if we're not growing we're dying and if we're not becoming stronger or becoming weaker so i think it's important to exercise but i know a lot of the times people think okay i need to be hitting this certain amount of calories and burning the certain amount of calories but there's just no way to know accurately how many calories you're actually burning and then with with um like same thing with even knowing how many calories you're eating an egg can have anywhere from like 40 to 70 calories and that's a big difference and all of the foods have such a big difference in their cow like calorie amount that there's no way to really know how many calories you're eating or burning and it just i know i have people who come to me who are eating more calories than they were eating prior and they're losing weight so i yeah i don't really do the calories in calories out method i think there is truth to it to a certain extent but um it's not the full picture yeah i i i would definitely agree with that and uh you know just just to you know um to go into it a bit the idea of burning calories is uh you know it's a bit of a misnomer because we literally burnt these different foods to see or these different substances like you know carbohydrates and proteins and fats and actually burn them to see how much energy they gave off okay and that's why we talked about burning calories but these are these are complex bio organic compounds and you know they work very differently in your body you know according to your biochemistry these these things are like you know any sort of you know drug or substance that you put in your body it's going to have an effect on your body and so just the idea that just these are interchangeable units of energy is absolutely nonsensical and you know any anyone who thinks that has really not thought about it you know and unfortunately that that means that there's a lot of doctors that do that and there's a lot of actually quite quite uh you know well-known uh doctors that have a big following and and success that just say this this asinine thing where like you know this is these complex biochemical organic compounds are just going to be just exactly the same just completely interchangeable it's like we know that's not true and these people took biochemistry in order to get into medical school they damn well know better and so like and then just just forget it because the dogma is so strong and it's just like oh your calories and calories out if you burn more than you then you consume then obviously your entire biochemistry changes depending on what you eat and you know when you're eating you know carbohydrate uh heavy foods you're gonna raise your insulin you're gonna you're you're gonna slow your metabolism down that's just how it's gonna work and you're gonna start storing fat you're not going to be burning fat period and so you know there are different mechanisms in your body that these different you know organic chem compounds affect and it's just that's just a fact of life you know it's in biochemistry textbook we have with all charts talking about it about like this chemical was this chemical that goes to this one goes this one goes this one you know excites this and blah blah blah like this is this is just this is just hard facts and and then we see this also in practice you know because we see people like yourself that you know work hard work hard push push push push or people they're they're starving themselves and and just not losing weight they're not burning fat my mom was one of these people when after she had me um she had a difficult time uh you know getting her body back in order and losing weight she was very self-conscious about this she she did not like it and she told me that she would at one point she was eating two to four hundred calories a day and she was running for like two hours in the morning and two hours at night and she could not lose weight past a certain point she just could not and she was very depressed over it um but she got in crazy shape you know which is great and and she said that you know that was that allowed her to be healthy enough to have my younger brother who was the fifth so i was the fourth he was the fifth and she said she probably wouldn't have been healthy enough uh to have him if she hadn't been in such good condition so you know she said that well at least that that came out of it but you know there are countless examples in in real in real life where this this does doesn't happen and a lot of uh you know weight loss centers even tell you like you have to eat more than 1200 calories a day or you're not going to lose weight and so you know these people then say like oh no still calories and calories out you just said you just said you know you eat less than 1200 calories and there's gonna be a problem so um yeah what about fasting do you um do you ever do that yourself or do you do you find that a useful tool in in weight loss this is interesting because i just spoke with somebody who was just so anti-fasting that it really was like shocking to me because i wasn't expecting it um and i think that fasting has everything has benefits you know you can google whatever you want to find and you can always find the pros and the cons to everything um i personally intermittent fast so i my first meal is around 11 30 and then i finish eating around 5 30 so i'm doing an 18 hour fast it's not purposeful i'm not hungry if i ever am hungry i'm not going to say i can't eat um so i'll eat if i'm over hungry and follow my hunger cues but um i think i mean specifically for weight loss absolutely i think it can help i think just because you are restricting yourself to the amount so you know you can only eat so many calories in a certain amount of time or at least even just my own experience is i'm actually thinking about doing three meals in a day now just because i can't sit down and have so much food in one sitting it just is so stuffed so that's a tool because people sit down to have their meal and they'll get super stuffed and then they're not going to want to eat more food but ideally even if someone's just having enough protein for the day that's going to signal to their brain i'm full so they're going to stop eating so i think fasting i don't do uh longer like 24 hour fast i've tried it a couple times mostly i like fasting for time saving like just because it works really well not having to constantly be thinking about the next time i'm going to be eating so i wanted to do like an omad life but i just can't sit down and eat all the the calories i need to eat in one sitting yeah i've noticed that too like if i'm if i'm pretty sedentary i'll i'll be fine with like a you know two pound steak or maybe a bit more and we'll go and i can i can certainly eat that in one go and that and i'll just maintain uh you know my body composition and weight if i'm not working out as soon as i'm working out my body just wants more it wants more calories and wants more protein and wants more fat and and so i'll just end up being more hungry and i'll end up sort of eating twice a day i'm the same way i'll just naturally eat you know one big meal a day sometimes two if i'm working out and and but that's not fasting per se because i think that fasting uh you know describes you know a state where you're purposefully depriving yourself of nutrition when your body's asking for it you know i'm hungry but no i'm gonna i'm fasting today and so you're purposely saying that as opposed to i'm just not hungry i just don't i just don't want to eat i think that's just just your body's natural uh rhythm and responses um i think that um a lot of people have very good success just listening to their body and that most people's bodies understand what they want when you allow them to so when you're not eating carbohydrates your body is just able to process energy properly and and recognize how much fat you have in storage and recon and know exactly how much it wants as input and that you can just sort of listen to that if you're eating carbohydrates obviously that that deranges things and drains your your signaling molecules your signaling molecules for hunger and and you just feel like you're starving all the time a lot of the studies well i think all really all the studies i've seen that look at fasting and then fasting mimicking diets they're always comparing this to you know a carbohydrate heavy diet i haven't really seen any in uh you know fasting for a keto population or a carnivore population uh maybe there may be there are benefits i don't i don't know um the study all those sort of studies that i've seen are just comparing this to eating and not eating as opposed to you know eating a standard diet and not eating and and then they'll have a fasting mimicking diet which is literally just keto and you know you're just not eating carbohydrates you're in a fasting metabolism and um and this is fasting and it seems to have you know the same effects you have a fasting mimicking diet seems to have you know very similar if not the exact same outcomes um as as fasting and so um yeah i don't i don't um i think i think most people don't need it but i think there are people who have disordered eating and have serious portion control issues and sometimes though because i tell people you know eat eat what you want eat as much as you want and they don't really want is the key word there because some people will say like oh i'm really not enjoying this you know it just tastes so horrible but you talk to them and find out that actually it tasted really really good but then they get to a point where it stops tasting good and they have to force feed themselves and like it takes me two hours to finish a meal and it's like you know that's your body screaming at you in very loud words you know don't eat you don't need to eat it so as much as you want you clearly didn't want to finish that meal you know so you don't need to but they think like you know i can eat as much as i want i can just keep eating keep eating no no you eat as much as you want and your body tells you to stop and you stop wanting to but i have spoken to some people that basically that switch just doesn't exist and if they're eating fatty food probably because they've been so nutrient deprived for so long a lot of the the few people i'm referring to specifically here had a history of anorexia and you know disorderly dating in that manner and once they started eating fat they were first very nervous about it but they were just like oh my god i love it and but they they literally couldn't eat enough i guess they i could just keep eating it all day and i'm like well you know your body probably really really wants it and you know and then they're getting their cycle back and their hair is getting better and their skin's getting you know clearing up and and and their hormones are in proper order now because you know cholesterol is a precursor to basically all your major hormones and certainly your estrogen testosterone progestogens and so forth so that's really important to do i think some of these people i've spoken to not through my suggestion but just they've just relayed to me that fasting has actually helped them to reset their biochemical you know apparatus to then start recognizing how much food they need to eat what's too much what's too little and and actually sort of reset things and i do know um one of the functional medicine doctors that i work with here in perth uh dr rensberg he's been doing this for 40 years he's had very very good results uh with you know large-scale weight loss with you know fasting one day a week and you know just one one day you just you just do not eat at all and and he and he's sort of tried both ways and he finds that that's uh you know a good way of doing it but at the same time he wasn't doing carnivore that whole time he has actually switched and start suggesting that so it would be interesting to see what the data comes back uh with you know fasting in the population of people on carnivore yeah well and a couple different points that you said um it was interesting that you had said that with people who have disordered eating it's helped them because i feel like i've also talked to people who because of fasting have created more of a disordered eating because they feel like they have to eat at a certain time or they you know especially like when it comes to like social situations they're like i can't meet you at this time because that's when i eat it's like well we can make you know we can work around that um and also i i want i didn't even mention to that um with the fasting like i said it's restricting your calories at a certain time so not everyone that's why i think it's so helpful with weight loss is because people are just kind of naturally going to eat less calories when they're doing that um which then it's going to you know impact their hormones eventually over time so i think that the idea of fasting more for autophagy and cell turnover i like that more than for weight loss just because i feel like it you know can impact people's hormones so much that they become fat they're fasting all the time that they are not going to hit that weight loss because their metabolism is going to slow down um the other thing is when you i wanted to mention that because you were talking about i think you said anorexia something where i was like i've also had people who start eating carnivore and they're craving that fatty meat or they're craving you know foods that they've been so deprived of having this nutrition that they gain weight initially and then the weight will fall off once their hormones become more in balance so for me weight loss is a hormonal process so that's where i yeah mostly i'm like let's let's fine-tune the hormones and get the hormones back in place and so if you gain weight initially i know that that is like the last thing people want to do when they're trying to lose weight but um you know it's going to be more of a long-term solution than the i'm going to lose weight for a month and then it's going to come back yeah i think that yeah that's the thing too there are you know certain subset of people that even if they're they're overweight and they start turning into carnivore most people you know lose weight uh quite readily and and their body composition changes uh dramatically but some some don't and some uh stay the same weight or even put on weight uh i was talking you know talking to kelly hogan and she said she was one of these people and it was six months of really being strict just meat and water for six months and she you know put had put on weight and she said you know i really wasn't putting on muscle um i was basically saying the same you know fat composition maybe putting a little more um i think some of that would certainly be some muscle composition but you know she was she was saying that it wasn't all of it and then after six months all of a sudden just just a switch uh clicked and it just started just pouring off of her and i've seen that a few times as well some one one lady i spoke to she was older and it took a year and a half for her and but she you know she stayed the course and good for her you know she you know that's a long time to wait for results and just trust the process she's like it's gonna happen it's gonna happen it's going to happen you know i'll just and either way you know eating any other way is going to be less healthy and i'm going to have more problems and i think that's a very good way of looking at it too is that i didn't get the exact results i wanted right now so i'm going to go back to eating cake like probably not the best idea you know because going back to eating the other way is is certainly not going to get you where you want to go whereas this this eventually will and and does you know i would wonder if these people who had had you know a lot of deprivation uh caloric deprivation uh nutrient deprivation for such a long time who are just craving fat and we want and are putting on some weight if like you say at some point your body's just trying to load up on us because it's basically saying we've been starving for so long you know we're gonna die now so we need to we need to pack everything in at some point it's just gonna be like okay i think we're i think we're okay now and and and sort of click over and then you know lose the weight and go back to uh you know a more you know ordered way of eating and being able to find satiety as well and uh have have a more typical experience with this that you know i'd be curious to see that 100 i mean that i mean i exactly when people they're like their body is so starved that now it's just holding on to thinking this is going to happen again and then once the body's fully like i'm safe it's okay then you know then it'll do it do the right right thing i would i would expect so as well yeah um all right so what about some like obviously you've looked into this a lot you talk to a lot of people with a lot of different sorts of approaches what and and you're coaching people as well what are some you know some some pitfalls and things to do like some do's and don'ts when approaching a carnivore uh lifestyle i would say trying i would i it's so helpful to see what people are doing online because it gives you an idea of meal plans and like okay this person's that height this is how much they're eating but at the same sense i think coughing people is a big pitfall i mean specifically i thought eggs were the bee's knees eggs have they're like multivitamin for me eight eggs for over a year until finally i was like i am allergic or i have some sort of reactivity um and then i i'm not even kidding i got hundreds of people messaging me being like lily because of your video i stopped having eggs for a week my itching in like private parts and like places like you wouldn't i would not expect them to be having itching from eggs um went away and they're like thank you for sharing that because it's helped me so much but in the same sense i don't want everyone to think i'm allergic that they're all allergic to eggs just because i'm not having success with it right now and i think i can fix this but helping people is a big pitfall and then of course too because people are so used to that we need to eat less move more they come to this same way of eating doing that same thing and then also just not making it sustainable i think a lot of times people think i have to do beef only i think if you can afford lamb if you can do organ meats if you can do fish oysters shrimp sardines i mean i think the more the better because it's going to get you excited to have meals i know if i was just doing the same meal depending on the person of course but um it just adds like more excitement when you have more variety and it makes it more sustainable and it also makes you feel like when you go out to eat it's not well there's nothing for me it's like well you can do chicken you can do uh you know steak and eggs you can do sausages you can do bratwurst so um i think coming into it without i mean i have a video on my channel where i say there's 101 plus carnivore foods people don't even realize you can do chuck roast you can do ribs you can do i mean there are so many different things people can do so um i would i would i would explore that and do as many different things and test things out too and i would also say not get too rigid where it's like i can only eat one meal a day or two meals a day or i i eat just this food every single time and i'm that person so do as i say but not as i do but i do have the same meal for my first meal of the day just because i do really enjoy it and i look forward to it but if someone's miserable eating it it's not going to make it sustainable and also if someone like i know steak and butter gout i don't know how she did it but she went from one night eating this to the very next day flipping completely not me like i've baby-stepped my way into this and there are going to be both personality types so just knowing what kind of personality type do you have because you know you don't have to do it the the rule the rules say you can only eat it this way it's like you know is it gonna what's gonna be your long-term success and then try reintroducing something you know reintroduce pork see how it goes reintroduce whatever it is that you want to try and then if that's what i love about carnivore so much is it gives you like a great baseline normal that it's so easy to tell does it how is it coffee is it supplements what is it yeah yeah i mean and you can think about it you know as that you know elimination diet sort of thing you eliminate all these things out you go pure whatever it is and then you add things back in how does this affect me you know i certainly tried that as well i was like okay what does coffee do for me oh don't like that no so i don't i don't touch the stuff but um yeah i i try to tell people that's the thing i like beef i you know and and people say well it's very monotonous i don't think so i love it you know i feel like it's my birthday every single day because you know every usually on your birthday you have like that meal like the meal that you want you always love it's just your favorite every year every year i have you know just a big fat steak with like some butter bernays sauce and maybe like some big old prawns or something like that it was always it was always but it was always a big steak and now you know because i i i'm very good at cooking steaks now i'm preparing them and aging them and so i always have you know these things ready to go like a perfectly aged steak ready to go like it's just the best steak of my life every single night and it's just like it's like my birthday every night i said that to my dad like early on i was like it feels like my birthday like every day you know i just love this this is the only thing i want to eat anyway and and that's you also when you know you're hungry because if a steak doesn't taste good like you're just not hungry you're not and your brain's just being like no and and i've done that whereas i haven't eaten the whole day and i'm like well i should really eat because i need to eat i need the energy because i'm working out so much my brain's just like oh that sounds awful and i started eating a steak and it was just awful i didn't like it and so i just i just stopped the next day it tasted amazing again and so i try to listen to that but you know so what i tell people is that you know not everyone not everyone's like me not even prefers uh what i prefer and not everyone you know uh is on uh you know some people are on a budget and so you know i just tell people to eat the meat that you enjoy that you uh that makes you feel the best and that you can afford and you know if you want beef then you know ground beef is quite cheap brisket's very cheap and very fatty great stuff um pork is very cheap chicken is very cheap especially the dark meat which is the best part and you know but some people have problems with those as well and so you should see you should see what you're reacting to maybe you're reacting to you know grain fed chicken just can't do it and grain fed fish as well is an issue chickens also you know that that can be i know people that have had problems uh with uh with egg with chickens that have been you know fed you know corn and things like that they can't deal with it especially like egg whites and so people with autoimmune diseases seem to be obviously more sensitive to these sorts of things and you know they need to avoid at least the egg whites generally the chicken and the pork and even grain finished beef can cause some problems and so like early on it's best to do grass-fed if they can you know obviously that's not accessible or affordable to everybody so i think everyone should like you say like 100 different sorts of uh carnivore options out there and you just you just fine tune it and just find what you like find what you enjoy and and go from there um you know my my mom [Music] hated this at first because she's just a big foodie she loves cooking and and she's a fantastic cook and at first she was just really upset at all the things that she couldn't cook and and so i started telling i was like look you'll put your culinary skills to work and just try to find you know ways of making meat in an amazing way like different cups of beef give different cuts of of different meats and and and doing things an interesting way coming up with recipes that only have uh you know meat and dairy and so she has she's actually started really liking it she started getting these uh cookbooks from she has like 500 cookbooks and she's read them all and she's used them all and now she's getting these cookbooks from like these argentinian gauchos who are like flaying and cooking like entire cows like just putting them up on a spit and they're just cooking this entire damn thing and like yeah so they're the most outrageous picture you've ever seen because one of them he had he had a hundred full cows just on these these racks with you know big outdoor fires on like how many people were he was just feeding a city you know and um so now she's doing that and now she's she's found a lot of enjoyment uh you know looking at different ways of cocaine still staying within carnivore and you're really thinking about it you know because she's she's like okay here's what i'm working with and what can i do with it you can actually do a lot but you know it uh you know it takes some take some thought yeah and i have on my channel too i've made a carnivore pizza like crust and everything i've made tacos burritos pasta i mean all these i mean i've the endless i mean whatever you want me to make i can find a way to make it um you know taste the exact same but you realize when you if you were to go like i haven't had pizza in forever right but if i were to have it it would taste like maybe chemicals it wouldn't taste the same to me that it used to taste um i think the other thing is with people who come to carnivore i think they are so open-minded because you have to be open-minded to be able to even hear this information to be able to like want to even try um but at the same time because i think we can be open-minded to a certain extent and then we kind of feel say hey i did i went this far i'm not going to go that extreme but i have so many people who are like i'm not trying sardines and i'm like i love sardines i love them personally um so people like stay open-minded to trying organ meats you might hate it but try it so um i mean yeah the sky is the limit yeah absolutely and again you know go go with taste you know if like if beef liver tastes good your body probably wants wants those nutrients and you know i've actually spoke to people you know first they they eat liver for a couple days my house is so good they're so good they get the third day i'm like ugh yeah okay you don't need it anymore and and uh you know but then but then just normal meat tastes really good after that you know some of these things are very very dense with uh nutrients and you can you can end up overloading you know but and that's that's your body saying like no no we we've got enough of these just back off and um but uh yeah what about um we were talking sort of a bit before we came on air but we were talking about some uh anti-aging um sort of techniques and different sort of things but obviously you know people just uh find that i certainly noticed that i literally just started aging backwards and you know started looking younger and younger as i went my parents certainly have they you know mentally physically and just their appearance they have they've literally just aged backwards my parents are are now just 80. and they seriously don't look like they're out of their 60s and they certainly don't behave like they do as well what are some you know some things you've come across obviously i'm very ignorant to the whole world i think it was someone you mentioned that your your boyfriend was appalled that i hadn't heard of them before but apparently they're doing good work in this field with david sinclair um and and that's where it's tough because people who eat more carnivore or animal place follow me and they're like what david sinclair and i'm like i don't you know he's very plant-based so i don't know why you guys are bringing them up but um and i've noticed the same thing too where i feel like i'm looking younger as well especially in comparison to my friends which you know i'm 25 so watching my friends have gray hair and back acne and yeast infections and have joint pain and have pcos infertility they're taking medications they're all they have depression so on medications when you're 25 i don't think people should be should be or at any age i really don't feel like people should be on any medications but um i mean i've definitely found that people look younger and act younger too like you said i had um dr lisa whitaman she's also known as the carnivore doctor but she's 56 and she is doing cartwheels and so i'll have a lot of people come to me and say lily you have so much energy because you're 25 but i'm in my 50s so i can't you know i can't feel the way that you feel i'm like there's people who there's even um stephanie keto person she can do she's 54 she's doing handstand push-ups without being on the wall and i'm like there are women just way stronger than me um i can't do this so yeah um yeah you know what i said before i was like yeah that's that's the thing that was people will say that when it comes up um you know like well you can get away with that you know but you know you get older and and then your body just starts breaking down you can't deal with that anymore especially all that meat and all that fat will really break you down and you know like like sometimes people are talking to me i was like yeah and they were like well you know i'm 40 now this time the other and you're looking like i'm two years older than you and like it's just like they just blew them away and you know i i certainly don't feel that it's it's sort of like i don't you know it still feels really weird every time i see my own id i'm like oh jesus christ but you know i think that's like one of the one of the advantages i it's just an absolute selling point because people say well well it's just because they're so young and you obviously work out a lot i was like i haven't been to the gym in months and i'm two years older than you you know and so and then they just go wait what that can't be true and then all of a sudden they start paying attention but you know our you know i learned in genetics 20 years ago that chromosomally like we're actually designed to live 120 years you know so meaning that if you just stay out of your own way and just don't mess up and get yourself killed or don't kill yourself with you know poison that you'll live 120 years without doing anything special and yet we're dying in our 60s and 70s which is literally middle age and we're and we're just decaying and like you say you know on heavy medications when you're 25 like you should not be on any medications at 25 unless you have a serious genetic condition um you know this is these are all preventable these are all things that just don't need to exist and you know if we're if we're you know going on the timeline of 120 and you're eating corn you can and you can do that right there that's that's you know a lot of anti-aging and aging well is just not putting in these these poisons and toxins in your body that are going to stuff you up and now all of a sudden you've got another 40 years of excellent health and and you know the rest of the time is going to be excellent health as well you're not going to have all the medications and the back ache and then and the knee problems you're not going to develop arthritis in the first place you're not going to develop you know diabetes and weight problems in the first place and you're just going to feel amazing and then we get like different sorts of you know you know advances in in medical science that that can actually help extend your life in certain ways you know extend your telomeres which are you know the sort of caps on the end of your chromosomes and when you sort of run out of those you know that that's all it dies you can't but that's it you know that's that's the time that that cells had but you know there are different animals like i mentioned lobsters um before before we came on here you know they have caps telomeres those things are just they're immortal you know they'll just keep going forever there's probably some you know 2 000 year old lobster just you know just just eating children somewhere in the deeps and we don't even know about it but cancer cells also capped telomeres uh capture telomeres so they're immortal now they've immortalized their cells and they can just keep replicating they can keep going and and nothing can stop them they don't they won't die out and ourselves all ourselves will but you can extend your telomeres you know exercising actually has been shown to do this you know your testosterone growth hormone these sorts of things can can do that and exercise can stimulate testosterone and growth hormone estrogen as well and then so all of these things contribute to healthier bodies healthier cells and longevity in the long run but you know maybe we're going to find something that you know some way of capping ourselves capping our telomeres on ourselves you know i thought about that when i was a kid when i first learned about telomeres and that cancers and lobsters and different sorts of things had capped telomeres i'm like whoa why don't we just figure that one out why don't we do that and that would be very interesting who knows what would happen at the end of that probably you know body full of cancer cells probably generally when we start mucking around with our genetics and do something stupid like that we end up with a lot of weird tumors that we were not expecting and didn't want but you never know maybe maybe maybe not and maybe you end up just you know immortalizing yourself right there and just basically stop aging after that that would be kind of interesting um and then obviously there are some things that you know extend your telomeres like we like mentioned um and there's it might have been sinclair talking about this um and he was like injecting nad plus just iv and that this was um this was this was i guess showing promise and just extending your telomeres you know anything about that or not enough to talk on it but i've heard him talk about this too and dr paul saladina has a video on his channel where he goes more in depth than he talks more about what uh sinclair was saying about it oh okay so is saladino doing that now is he injecting uh no he doesn't think that you need to do any of that okay yeah yeah i don't think he do i don't even need to either i think it'd be it'd be interesting though um to see where that research goes i don't think i'm i'm gonna be the guinea pig um to see like but um you know i think when you optimize your body and optimize your health that you know things just work the way they're supposed to and i don't think you need to go mucking around much after that i don't know right yeah i believe that all disease begins in the gut so a lot of times we associate that with maybe oh yes diseases like diabetes or ulcerative colitis that's because of what we eat but even things like i have eye boogers smelly breath or um asthma like i you know there's a statistic out there that children when they have an asthma attack like some crazy statistic i don't know over 80 of them had it after eating an ice cream cone so it's just like there's so many things that have become so normalized that even with my family and friends they're they're having things happen to them but it's not because of food right unrelated to food like yeah i think everything is related to our diet and what we what we put into our bodies and what we fuel ourselves with obviously because in a way for me i think of food is like our battery so if we don't give ourselves food we're not going to turn on but if we give ourselves the wrong food we're we're not going to function correctly so yeah and and you know i use the um the fuel in that analogy with cars right you if you drive a ferrari you've taken all the classes on how to you know maintain it and drive it optimally and just do everything that you you can get the most out of your ferrari that's great but if you put diesel into it and it's it's a gas engine a gas petrol engine you're going to mess it up you're going to destroy the engine it's not going to run properly and so you know if we eat the wrong things we're going to we're going to hurt ourselves i mean this is so intuitive too i mean most plants are not edible we know this these things are not edible they'll cause you know serious harm and so we know that if you ingest something that's that's outside of of you know the healthy bounds this is going to harm you you know and even if you can get nutrients out of it you can eat dirt and get iron and zinc and copper you know that doesn't mean that you should eat dirt you know just because we can get nutrition out of something doesn't mean that that we should and this is something we do we talk about medicine you know or as surgeons you know just because you can do surgery doesn't mean you should do surgery you know just because you can do a treatment doesn't mean you should do it and just because you can eat a rock doesn't mean you should eat a rock or cabbage you know like it's you know you just you don't need to and you're going to you're going to change how your body works you're going to change the energy uh that you have you're going to change a lot of biochemical systems in your body and you're going to disrupt a lot of you know very very fine-tuned processes and you're going to you're going to get a bad result you know and and just to think that oh you know that that's not going to affect it as much as it is is is really not looking at it i think right and i'm not going to say carnivore is going to solve everyone's problems but i have had somebody like a friend say to me like well lily carnivore's not going to solve my depression and in my mind i'm like you don't realize how related food is that these sugars and how they are going to affect your brain chemistry and unfortunately the statistics out there right now of young people like i mean 11 10 years old because of social media and what they're exposed to just the way of the world how it is now they have depression like the so many people are depressed and you know what what does everyone else what is the commonality between everybody the food that they're eating and it does impact our chemistry in our brain and then on top of that so like i said i'm not going to say the carnivore is going to solve all of your problems but if you're feeding yourself the right fuel then if your mind's working correctly maybe you will get that job promotion because you are working better you're you have more mental clarity so you're going to be more efficient and you're going maybe you'll have um you'll attract a better relationship because you're a more positive person like it does start impacting all the things in life but you know i'm not going to say it's going to solve everything but i think it can help a lot yeah well it is and it's going to optimize your health anyway and so you know i you know as i tell people like you know carnivore can only you know reverse the problems that were caused by by malnutrition and you know food toxins in the first place you know if your people have problems outside of that they have genetic conditions uh they have other environmental uh uh influences that can harm them as well you know not getting enough sleep you know stressful job accidents you know other sort of toxins in the environment you know whatever you know people experience but there are a lot of things and and and some people have you know had years and years and years of damage and even even removing you know the cause of that damage you know but you know different sorts of sugars and foods sometimes you know there's there's going to be residual damage done that you can't reverse completely and so we just have to be mindful of that and you know and like you say it's not going it's not going to cure everything because not everything is caused by bad food it just isn't but a lot is and i mean so many of the problems that we deal with now are absolutely related to that and you know people who say that well it's not going to clear my depression it's like have you tried you know because there's actually quite a lot of you know large and growing body literature specifically on depression to show that you know it is absolutely diet related and you're not getting enough cholesterol and having low cholesterol it has a very strong association with depression and more so having low ldl cholesterol and being depressed has a much higher rate of suicide so attributed to it so psychiatrists are now pushing their patients their depressed patients to to raise their ldl cholesterol so yes it it could very well cure people's depression and there are other things as well uh in plants that will screw up their their brain chemistry as well like like you mentioned and we don't understand all of them but there there again is a growing body of literature showing that when you eliminate out a lot of different plant foods and add in meat and fat that that people's depression anxiety and and actually psychiatric issues such as schizophrenia resolve that's wild you know like people like are hearing voices and having a very difficult time interpreting reality and then all of a sudden they change their diet and they're like oh okay yeah then things are back to normal again they don't have to take these very very you know difficult drugs to take they have a lot of side effects some people tolerate them fine some don't and so and a lot of them don't take them because of that and you know the homeless pop population on the street is is very uh a very good example of that of people that really don't tolerate the medications and have failed conventional treatment for one reason or another and they end up on the street and self-medicating because that's that's how they feel best and they don't they don't like how they feel with the conventional medications and treatments and so that's that's something that if that can help that population that that would be a remarkable thing to do to give these people their lives back or at least a chance at their lives back right i've even heard the cholesterol thing i've heard that the the statistics of people in prison from committing crimes are actually they have tested for having very low cholesterol levels too so you're more likely to commit a crime if you have low cholesterol levels nice yeah that well you know and you know cholesterol is um is so important i mean it's it's ubiquitous you know our our cell membranes are made out of cholesterol i remember thinking that an eighth grade uh biology class you know just like the cell membranes were just was all cholesterol and i was just like isn't that something that's bad for you that stuff that's gonna kill is gonna cause a heart attack like how can it be bad for us like we're we're literally made out of it i'm like okay well you get an abundance past a certain point maybe there's a problem like i guess that would sort of have to be what it is but like that just never made sense to me even as a kid and you know and there's there's so many processes in your body that that cholesterol is absolutely vital for and you know to to limit this and then give drugs that actually you'll remove this and something that's very very good for you it has side effects of its own you know it can only can only cause harm and i think that um you know the quicker that we get rid of uh you know this sort of you know stigma on fat and cholesterol uh the better because it's it's really harming people it's really causing harm right yeah um great so you talk about like you know just like the whole health approach what so so apart from you know weight loss and so forth like what are sort of the main tips that you try to get people and you touched on a few of them already but what are sort of the the the main holistic approaches to improving your life so for people watching this it was 7 am when we started recording and i made sure to wake up and do some meditation now i don't think that everybody has to meditate but i think that we all because we have such high levels of cortisol from just like the way we are now it's just we're all stimulated and so i think that having like meditation or giving gratitude or affirmations or taking up just like five minutes in the day which nobody really takes five minutes in the day anymore for just themselves it's like okay i'm taking my time in the day to watch tv but that's still not even giving time to just like close there and just like feel you breathe feel you you know i was thinking you know when you're sick you have a stuffy nose or something and you can't breathe and you're like i just want to be able to breathe through my nose we take that for granted right now you and i were like i didn't even like think about that or i you know you used to have joint pain different pains that aren't there anymore that you don't even think about because they're not there but i think that when we uh take time for ourselves and work on our mindset whether that's listening to podcasts i like to plan out my next day's agenda because that helps me with my sleep because i know it's all planned out and it's done and it's on the paper um but i mean even with food all this relates to your mindset because some people have you know mindset it's when we think about weight loss a lot of times people want to lose weight because they want to look good but if once that person loses their weight there's going to be something else well i need to dye my hair fix my nose my teeth are messed up i'm not beautiful enough we're comparing ourselves all the time to people on social media that no matter what you think you're going to fix to look more beautiful this is all starting in the mind so a lot of times when people come to me for weight loss i'm like well why do you want to lose weight and if they're like then i'm like it's because you want to look good and that's fine but you can look good today we just need to figure out what it is that you need to do to feel that way so a lot of like the depression anxiety and things that people may have even if they're eating the right diet i think you know taking some time to work on our mind um getting good sleep so whether that's um for me i like to get up in the morning and get some exposure to daylight so it helps reset the circadian rhythm and i'm producing the melatonin at the right times or um getting off the electronics an hour and a half before bed it's just to like get off the blue light start calming down the body so i would say sleep stress mindset exercise i do think like i said i think it's important for just longevity purposes and we're not meant to sit all day if we go to an office or a job or we're sitting on the couch all day our bodies are meant to move so i think uh an hour i mean walks that does not mean working out going to the gym doing hit workouts and cardio getting a walk outside so i take walks after each meal also helps with digestion but again just getting the body moving and don't watch the news [Laughter] yeah that's definitely uh important for depression is staying away from that you know depressing stuff yeah okay all right well thank you very much lily thank you so much for coming on i really
